A vigorous climber and profuse bloomer, introduced in 1914 ‘Gravetye Beauty’ is a timeless texensis hybrid that blooms later in the season, from mid summer through early fall when other flowering perennials are winding down. From around July to September or October in our gardens, Gravetye displays a profusion of upward-facing tulip-shaped flowers with 4 to 6 recurved petals in ruby red on the outside and crimson red on the inside. Excellent for cutting and display in floral arrangements, the flowers average about 2 to 3 inches long and are sure to capture the attention of the hummingbirds. Attractive blue-green leaves divided into 3 to 5 leaflets serve as an excellent backdrop for the flowers. At 8 to 12 feet tall, Gravetye will quickly climb and cover an arch, fence, pergola, trellis, climbing rose, small tree or other structures its vines can twine around. It is also nice allowed to roam through shrub beds and perennial gardens or to grow over a low to midsize shrub hedge.

Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, the Gravetye Beauty Clematis is ideal for use vine to climb and cover arches and pergolas, trellises and obelisks, fences and rails, posts and poles and any other structures that its vines can twine around or be trained to. Excellent to climb small trees and the perfect companion for climbing roses. Also nice meandering through and mingling with larger shrubs such as hydrangeas or to cover a low to mid-size hedge. A fine addition to Clematis gardens, hummingbird gardens, red themed gardens, antique gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 4 feet apart for covering a fence

Gravetye Beauty Clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Clematis tend to like sun on their vines and shade on their roots to keep them cooler. So we always plant a groundcover or flowers around the base of the vine to meet this preference. 

Note: All clematis prefer to be planted so that the crown of the plant, where its stem(s) emerge from the soil in which it was grown, is at least 3 to 4 inches below the soil level.
